10 Things You Should Know In Nigeria Today


 

1. There was protest in Kano state yesterday as hundreds of youth stormed the street to condemn the choice of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the new Emir of Kano. The protesters who stormed the streets with dangerous weapons were demanding that the choice of Sanusi be reversed with immediate effect.

2. Staff of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, and the leadership of the leading unions in the aviation sector; the National Union of Air Transport Employees, NUATE, and the Air Transport Services Senior Staff of Nigeria, ATSSSAN, last week threatened to embark on a strike action if their requests are not met by June 30, 2014. The workers on Thursday last week staged an open congress, demanding the approval of the various agreements between them and the management.

3. There was an explosion at the Military quarter-guard in Gombe on Sunday when a suspected female suicide bomber got her bomb detonated after she embraced an army officer while approaching the quarter-guard. The bomb killed the soldier and the bomber ( woman) injuring other soldiers around scene.

4. The All Progressives Congress, APC through its Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed has condemned President Goodluck Jonathan for accusing APC governors of sponsoring insurgency across the country. The party said, by so doing, Jonathan has taken for granted the very serious issue of terrorism in the country. The party further affirmed that such could be why the president continues to remain clueless on how to address insurgency in the country.

5. Members of All the Progressives Congress (APC) were on Sunday attacked by alleged PDP thugs and mobile policemen led by their commander, Selenkere Michael.



The attack led to the death of an APC member from ward 12 in Ado-Ekiti while several others were seriously injured.

6. Report says the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, NAMA, on Sunday grounded the chartered aircraft of Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State. The said aircraft was allegedly grounded in Kano State during Amaechi’s condolence visit to Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso over the death of the formal Emir of Kano, Ado Bayero.

7. There is likelihood of an epidemic in Borno state due to littered corpses found at different places in the state. According to report, abandoned corpses are littered everywhere in the state, especially Gwoza area that has been taken over by the insurgents. The affected communities and their leaders have said that it is difficult to bury those killed in the recent attacks as the communities are still being controlled by the insurgents.

8. The South East Governors’ Forum has sympathised with the entire people of Kano state over the death of the former Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, who died on Friday at the age of 83. In a statement by the Forum’s Chairman and Abia State Governor, Chief Theodore Orji, the Governors stated that they received the news of the death of Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, with shock and disbelief.

9. The Federal government yesterday denied that it was planning to name the University of Ibadan after the late Dora Akunyili. Reacting, the Presidential Spokesperson, Reuben Abati said there was no such plan, as the president’s earlier condolence message on the death of the former NAFDAC boss stands.

10. Chidiogo, daughter of former NAFDAC boss, late Prof. Dora Akunyili has termed her last moment with her mother while she was in hospital as memorable. In her post on facebook, she commended her mother for living an exemplary life, saying that her life was an inspiration and source of courage to her and her other siblings.
